Flood Situation in UP and Bihar: Thousands Affected, Relief Efforts Underway

Heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, affecting thousands of people and resulting in loss of life and property.

Uttar Pradesh Flood Situation

  • Prayagraj and Varanasi: The Ganga River has crossed the danger mark in both cities, with rapid increases in water levels indicating a worsening situation. In Prayagraj, the Yamuna River is also flowing above the danger mark due to the rise in water levels from the Ken-Betwa rivers.
  • Thousands Affected: Many villages have been disconnected, and crops are submerged. In Varanasi, the Ganga and Varuna rivers have overflowed, causing water to enter homes and roads.
  • Casualties: Nine people have lost their lives in the floods, including a child in Fatehpur who drowned in the swollen Non River.

Bihar Flood Situation

  • Ganga and Other Rivers: The Ganga River has crossed the danger mark in Patna and Buxar, while other rivers like the Kosi, Bagmati, and Burhi Gandak are also flowing above the danger mark in various districts.
  • Over 1 Million Affected: Nearly 1 million people have been affected by the floods in 17 districts, with over 260,000 evacuated to safer areas.
  • Relief Efforts: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) teams are working on rescue and relief operations, with additional teams being deployed.

Other Developments

  • Punjab: Heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh has caused a rapid increase in water levels at the Pong Dam in Punjab, which has a capacity of 1390 feet and currently stands at 1366.04 feet ¹ ².
